The Designing for Social Innovation and Leadership Course (DSIL) is a 14-day intensive international field-based program for social impact changemakers and entrepreneurs, that is delivered by the United Nations Mandated University for Peace (UPEACE) in partnership with the Southeast Asia-based Sarus. Scholarships are available for this course, which is intended for graduate students, young professionals and practitioners from across the world who are interested in creating social impact and driving innovative change. The course involves 10 days immersive fieldwork in Southeast Asia (Thailand, West Bali, Philippines, Taiwan, Cambodia,Myanmar) and 15 online sessions.

Applicants can apply for the following field immersion programs for 2017: 1) Indonesia Track (Ubud + Rural West Bali): 9 to 17 June 2017, Theme: sustainable economic development at the intersection of indigenous wisdom + the environment;  or 2) Thailand and Cambodia Track: 22 to 30 September 2017, Theme: social enterprise and pathways to inclusive design in development.

Those who are unable to attend the field immersion programs can take The Virtual Track, comprising 5 months of online lessons, from 15 August 2016 to 15 December 2017. The Virtual lessons will cover the DSIL Curriculum and engage with emerging thinking and leaders in innovation and design thinking.


Partial scholarships averaging US$700 for field immersion applicants are available, and in previous years more than 90% of applicants have applied for funding. Scholarships for the Virtual Classroom average US$100.

Participants who successfully complete the Virtual Classroom and Field Immersion requirements will receive a DSIL Certificate granted by the Centre for Executive Education, UN University for Peace Conflict Studies


Applicants do not have to be currently enrolled in a full-time academic program to be eligible for this course. All practitioners, professionals and graduate students interested in driving social impact, civil society and social entrepreneurship may apply.


Applications for scholarships are to be done online by 15 May 2016.
