Type of Funding

The 2019 RELX Group Environmental Challenge is inviting submission of proposals outlining innovative ideas that advance access to safe water and/or sanitation where access is presently at risk. Those who apply as individuals may be from the not-for-profit or for-profit sectors. Projects must have clear practical applicability, addressing identified need, and advance related issues such as health, education, or human rights.

1st Prize: US$50,000; 2nd Prize: US$25,000. The prizes must be used to launch, sustain or effectuate the respective winning proposal. Winning projects will be highlighted in Water Research.

The winners also receive free access for 1 year to ScienceDirect, RELX Group’s Scientific, Technical & Medical business database of full text, scientific information, including almost 250,000 articles in Environmental Sciences.

All individuals above 21 years of age may apply as individuals, teams of individuals or on behalf of organisations. ‘Organisations’ refer to educational and not-for-profit institutions and corporations. The projects must be original works, and advance sustainable access to safe water where such is presently at risk and/or access to improved sanitation. In addition, the projects must be replicable, scalable, sustainable and set a benchmark for innovation, have practical applicability, are non-discriminatory and have equity of access, involve and impact a range of stakeholders and have local or community-level engagement. Early stage projects are preferred.

All applicants will be offered access to relevant RELX products, such as Water Research, that can help in the preparation of their submissions, as well as to LexisNexis Risk Solution’s open source high performance computing (HPCC) resource, to allow them to process large amounts of research data. Documentation, tools, code examples and online training courses in HPCC and ECL, the programming language used by the HPCC Systems platform, will also be available to those applicants that may need them.

Applications are to be done online by 31 May 2019.
