The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), IDB Invest and IDB Lab are inviting university students who are nationals of IDB member countries to apply for 2020 Internships. The 2020 Winter Internship Program at IDB’s headquarters in Washington DC, USA are full-time positions running from 16 January to 15 March 2020. Thirty interns will be accepted to learn about development work and corporate management at the IDB. They will benefit from first hand work experience, either working directly with teams coordinating development projects or with teams in the corporate and/or strategic core including communications, technology and legal.
The 2020 internships at IDB’s country offices in Latin America and the Caribbean, Offices in Asia and Europe and the Institute for the Integration of Latin America and the Caribbean (INTAL), will commence 20 March 2020. Internships in Country Offices/Offices are 2 to 6 months practical experience programs.
The internship will enable students to:
- further their knowledge and understanding of development in Latin America and the Caribbean;
- learn about the operations and culture of the IDB and IDB Invest;
- gain exposure to the dynamics of an international development organization; and
- work alongside experts in the field of development.

The Group comprises the IDB, which has worked with governments for 60 years; IDB Invest, which serves the private sector and IDB Lab, which tests innovative ways to enable more inclusive growth.
Interns are paid as ‘consultants’ in accordance with IDB regulations. Interns however, have to finance their own travel and accommodation costs. They should bring enough money for the first 2 weeks, after which they will receive the initial payment.
For non-US citizens and non-US residents, IDB is responsible for submitting a request to the Department of State for such status to be granted.
For undergraduate intern vacancies, applicants should be between 21 and 27 years old. For graduate intern vacancies, applicants should be between 21 and 33 years old. They have to be currently enrolled university students, whose graduation date cannot be before the end date of the internship. Undergraduate Interns have to be between 21 and 27 years old, whilst graduate interns have to be between 21 and 33 years old. They have to be available to work full-time during the internship period.
Those who have previously worked at the IDB, IDB Invest or IDB Lab, are ineligible. Those with family members or close relatives working at the IDB, IDB Invest or IDB Lab, are also ineligible.
Afro-descendants, indigenous people, people with disabilities and people from the LGTBIQ community are encouraged to apply.
Applicants for internships at IDB’s headquarters in Washington, D.C., must be citizens of the Bank’s member countries (see the Official Website for member countries). For Internships at Country Offices in Latin America and the Caribbean, the Offices in Asia and Europe and INTAL, applicants must be nationals of the country where the country office or office is located.
Applications are to be done online between 1 October 2019 and 18 October 2019 for the Winter 2020 internships at IDB’s headquarters in Washington, D.C.
