Description

The Academy on Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at American University Washington College of Law is holding a competition for the 2020 Human Rights Essay Award. The Essay Award Topic for 2020 is: “Rule of Law and Human Rights: Strengthening Democratic Institutions”. Submissions of scholarly work on the substantive law relevant to this theme may be done in either English or Spanish. International human rights law includes both international humanitarian law and international criminal law.

Benefits

Two awards will be given, 1 for the best article in English and the other for the best article in Spanish. Winners will receive a  scholarship to attend either the Diploma or Certificate of Attendance under the Program of Advanced Studies in Human Rights and Humanitarian Law at the American University Washington College of Law. The scholarship covers tuition fees, travel expenses to and from Washington D.C., housing at the university dormitory, and a stipend to cover meals and incidentals, for the 3-week program. If the winners choose not to stay in the residence halls, they can make their own arrangements and will be reimbursed for the amount equivalent to 3 weeks housing on-campus.

The best papers may be published in the proceedings of the Academy and/or in other media that the Academy may deem appropriate.

Eligibility

Only candidates with a law degree and a demonstrated experience or interest in international human rights law are eligible for the Award. They have to choose a subject pertaining to the topic chosen by the Academy for the year. Participants can choose any subject related to the substantive law relevant to the field. They have to submit an unpublished legal article or paper written in English or Spanish, and only 1 submission may be made per applicant. Each entrant must also include a curriculum vitae of no more than 3 pages in length explaining the experience or interest of the author in human rights issues. Articles must not exceed 35 pages in length, including footnotes.

Past winners are not eligible.
