The Goi Peace Foundation/UNESCO is inviting young people up to 25 years old to submit essays for this year’s 20th Anniversary Special Edition of the International Essay Contest for Young People. The theme of this year’s contest is: “Creating a Society Full of Kindness”. Contestants are to describe what kindness means to them and how they think a kinder society could be created. Contestants would have to first carry out 10 acts of kindness, and then use their experiences as inspiration in writing their essays, although the essay does not need to be about their acts of kindness. As a special edition, this year’s contest involves action in addition to writing, as participating in the contest directly contributes to creating a better world. But only the essay itself will be considered in the judging process.

Entrants can submit essays in 1 of 2 categories: 1) Children (up to 14 years old), or 2) Youth (15 to 25 years old).

This program is an activity of the UNESCO Global Action Programme (GAP) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD).

The winners of each category will receive the following prizes:

  • 1st Prize: Certificate and cash prize of Yen 100,000 (approx. US$900)
  • 2nd Prize (for 2 winners): Certificate and prize of Yen 50,000 (approx. US$450)
  • 3rd Prize (for 5 winners): Certificate and gift
  • Honorable Mention Prize (for 25 winners): Certificate and gift

The 1st prize winners will be invited to the award ceremony in Tokyo, Japan scheduled for 23 November 2019, with their travel expenses covered and will receive the Minister of Education Award.

Additional awards such as Recognition for Effort, Best School Award and School Incentive Award will be given if applicable.

Original and unpublished essays of 700 words or less may be submitted by anyone up to 25 years old in English, French, Spanish or German, or 1600 characters or less in Japanese. The essay has to be written by 1 person; co-authored essays are not acceptable.

Essays may be typed or printed.

Essays are to be submitted online or by post by 15 June 2019.
