The Einstein Forum and the Daimler and Benz Foundation are offering the Einstein Fellowship 2020 for outstanding young thinkers in the field of humanities, social sciences, or natural sciences who wish to pursue a project in a different field from that of their previous research. The purpose of the fellowship is to support those who, in addition to producing superb work in their area of specialization, are also open to other, interdisciplinary approaches, in the footsteps and spirit of Albert Einstein.

The duration of the fellowship should be 5 to 6 months, which should preferably take place during the summer months and end within the calendar year. At the end of the fellowship, fellows have to present their project in a public lecture at the Einstein Forum and at the Daimler and Benz Foundation.

Fellows will each receive a a stipend of €10,000 and reimbursement of travel expenses. The stipend is meant for covering living expenses and project expenses. Living accommodation will be provided for the fellowship period in the garden cottage of Einstein`s own summerhouse in Caputh, Brandenburg, only a short distance away from the universities and academic institutions of Potsdam and Berlin.

Applicants must be below the age of 35 and hold a university degree in the humanities, in the social sciences, or in the natural sciences. The Einstein Fellowship is not for applicants who wish to complete an academic study they have already begun. Applications must demonstrate the quality, originality, and feasibility of the proposed project, as well as the superior intellectual development of the applicant. It does not matter whether the applicant has begun working toward, or currently holds, a PhD, or not. The proposed project does not have to be completed during the duration of the fellowship; it can be the start of a longer project.

Fellowships for dissertation research are not eligible. In addition, the proposed project must be significantly different in content and preferably, in field and form, from the applicant’s previous work.

Applications are to be sent via email by 15 May 2019.
