The Václav Havel Human Rights Prize is awarded to reward outstanding civil society action in the defence of human rights. Nominations for individuals and NGOs who have made outstanding contributions in this area can now be submitted for the 2019 Václav Havel Human Rights Prize.
The winner shall be given €60.000, a trophy and a diploma commending the Prizewinner’s outstanding contribution to the cause of human rights. The award will be presented in Strasbourg at the Council of Europe on 30 September 2019. The Václav Havel Library will also organise an international conference in Prague in honour of the Prizewinner.
All individuals or non-governmental institutions active in the defence of human rights are eligible for nomination. Nominees should have made a tangible difference to the human rights situation of a given group or country, been instrumental in uncovering systemic violations, or have successfully mobilised public opinion or the international community for a given cause. Those who have been successful in achieving genuine improvements in a given area or who have contributed to the human rights cause at the expense of great personal or physical risk, are also eligible for nomination.
The nomination form is available online. Completed nomination forms are to be sent via email, in English or French, by 30 April 2019.
