Description

The different departments of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) offer internships to university students and recent graduates throughout the year. These opportunities could be in field or UNHCR headquarters locations. The internships, which are of 2 to 6 months in duration, offer young people the opportunity to gain experience in the humanitarian sector in an international environment.

Currently there are 3 specific internship opportunities, to which interested candidates can apply directly:

  • Internship at the Prevention and Response to Sexual Exploitation and Abuse and Sexual Harassment UNHCR unit: 2 months in Geneva, Switzerland
  • Internship at Public Health Section, Division of Programme Support and Management: 5 months in Geneva, Switzerland
  • Private Sector Communication Internship: 6 months in Copenhagen, Denmark

Eligible university students and recent graduates could either apply for specific internship opportunities or for the internship pool, which receives applications throughout the year. When applying, candidates should state their preferred location of work, period of availability as well as preferred area of work.

Benefits

Interns who do not receive financial support from an outside party will receive an allowance to support costs related to cost of food, local transportation and living expenses. Interns should be ready to cover their own travel to the duty station as well as any additional costs above and beyond any allowance they may receive from UNHCR. It is the intern’s responsibility to arrange for a visa and to cover related costs. UNHCR can provide support with the required documents. Interns have to arrange their own medical insurance.
