The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM) invite youths around the world to submit original and creative short films on the themes of migration, diversity, social inclusion and the prevention of xenophobia, for the UNAOC PLURAL+ 2019 Youth Video Festival. By supporting the distribution of youth-produced media, PLURAL+ recognizes youth as powerful agents of social change, and empowers them to share their creative vision with the world and foster respect for diversity.
There are 3 age-based categories for the competition:
- Up to 12 years old
- 13 to 17 years old and
- 18 to 25 years old
Three PLURAL+ Award Winners will be chosen in each age category and will be awarded with the PLURAL+ International Jury Award. One video will receive the Special Award for the Prevention of Xenophobia.
PLURAL+ winners will be given an all-expenses paid trip to New York to present their work during the annual PLURAL+ Awards Ceremony in early November 2019, which is attended every year by United Nations employees, media professionals, representatives of civil society organizations, academics, etc. In addition, PLURAL+ winning videos gain international exposure and PLURAL+ winners get the opportunity to meet and network with a multitude of professionals, peers, and organizations and to explore opportunities for further distribution and dissemination of their work.
Applicants can be from anywhere in the world, who are 25 years old or below. People appearing in the video do not have to be young but the video must reflect the youth’s opinions or reflections about migration, diversity, social inclusion and xenophobia. The person submitting the video must be actively involved in its making; e.g. either as a director, writer, camera person, editor, actor, coordinator, etc.
The immediate family of the staff of the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and members of the PLURAL+ International Jury are not eligible to enter the competition.
More than 1 youth may work together to make 1 video, as long as all members of the group are no older than 25 years old. If there are adults above the age of 25 who are helping in the making of the video, such as educators, teachers, instructors, etc., their role must be restricted to minimal involvement. However, particularly for the age group of up to 12 years, educators could have a more substantial role in the production of the video.
When submitting a video as a group, the video will fall into the age category of the entrant.
PLURAL+ video entries must be between 1 and 5 minutes in length and can be of any genre (animation, documentary, music video, comedy, etc.) as long as they can make the audience think in constructive ways about the about the PLURAL+ themes of migration, diversity, social inclusion, and the prevention of xenophobia. In addition, videos can be in any language as long as English subtitles are provided.
Videos will be judged on the basis of their potential to have an impact on the audience, as well as on their artistic, innovative, and creative content.
Entries can be submitted online via video-streaming website or file hosting website, or via email or by post, by 16 June 2019.
