The United Nations is inviting youths who are committed to climate change action, to apply for the 2019 UN Youth Climate Summit, which will take place on 21 September 2019 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, as part of a weekend of events leading up to the UN Secretary-General’s Climate Action Summit on 23 September 2019.
The UN Youth Climate Summit is a platform for young leaders who are driving climate action to showcase their solutions at the United Nations, and to meaningfully engage with decision-makers on climate change. The Youth Climate Summit will feature a full-day of programming that brings together youths committed to combating climate change at the pace and scale needed to meet the challenge. It will be action oriented, intergenerational, and inclusive, with equal representation of young leaders from all walks of life.
Limited funding for travel, lodging, etc. is available to support the cost of attendance). Those who can only attend with financial support have to indicate such in the application form and explain the reasons, so that their needs could be evaluated.
Eligible applicants are young people between the ages of 18 and 29 who are young activists, innovators, entrepreneurs, and change-makers who are committed to combating climate change. Young leaders from the Global South are especially encouraged to attend. Attendees will be selected based on their demonstrated commitment to addressing the climate crisis and their displayed leadership in advancing solutions.
Climate leaders under the age of 18 may be nominated by their organizations. It is also possible to participate in the Youth Climate Summit virtually.
Applicants have to provide the following information in their applications:
- The ways they are advancing climate action in their communities.
- The motivation for their climate action work.
- Why they wish to attend the Youth Climate Summit and what do they hope to get out of it.
- The role of young people in addressing the climate crisis.
- How they plan to use what they learn at the Youth Climate Summit to build upon their work in climate action.
