Type of Funding
The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) and S.N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences in Kolkata, India are offering 5 fellowships annually to young foreign scientists from developing countries who wish to pursue research towards a PhD in physical sciences. Eligible fields of study are Engineering Sciences; Astronomy, Space and Earth Sciences; Mathematical Sciences; and Physics.
The TWAS-SN Bose Postgraduate Fellowship Programme for AY 2019 is tenable at the S.N. Bose National Centre for 4 years with the possibility of a 1-year extension. A sandwich option is available for fellows who are registered for a PhD degree in their home country. Alternatively, they may gain admission to a full-time PhD course at the S.N. Bose National Centre, which depends on the successful completion of a 1-year course work. In both cases, the programme requires only 1 journey to the host country.
S.N. Bose will provide a monthly stipend in local currency to cover living expenses and food. Free on-campus accommodation will be provided. The monthly stipend does not cover comprehensive health insurance. The Centre does however deduct a small contribution towards a Contributory Medical Scheme. There will be partial reimbursement of Doctor’s fees, medicines and/or hospitalization costs, if any, and only for costs incurred in Kolkata. All SN Bose-TWAS fellows must have their own medical insurance before joining the programme to cover medical emergencies.
Applicants have to be 35 years old or younger, and nationals of a developing country other than India. They must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or any developed country and must have completed at least a total 5 years of undergraduate and postgraduate studies in a recognized university or institute. Only holders of a Masters degree in Physics, Mathematics or Physical Chemistry who are proficient in English may apply. To be eligible for the fellowships, applicants must show acceptance by a department of the S.N. Bose National Centre. Applicants can only apply for 1 TWAS fellowship per year.
They have to provide evidence that they will return to their home countries upon completion of fellowship and are not to take up other assignments during the period of fellowship. They have to be financially responsible for any accompanying family members.
Applications are to be done online by 30 June 2019.
