The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Ministry of Science and Technology in India, and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) are inviting young foreign scholars from developing countries who wish to pursue research towards a PhD in biotechnology, to apply for the 2019 TWAS-DBT Postgraduate Fellowship Programme. The Fellowships are tenable at key biotechnology research institutions in India for a period of up to 5 years and fellows should start their fellowship no earlier than beginning of 2020. The language of instruction will be in English.

Applicants may apply for Full-time Fellowships by enrolling in a PhD course at a host laboratory or institute in India or opt for the Sandwich Fellowship if they are registered for a PhD degree in their home country. The Sandwich Fellowship is for a minimum period of 12 months and a maximum period of 2 years. Full-time Fellowships are for an initial period of up to 3 years, which may be extended for a further 2 years, subject to the student’s performance.


DBT will provide a monthly stipend to cover for living costs, food and health insurance. In addition, Fellows will receive a house rent allowance.


Applicants cannot be more than 35 years old and have to be nationals of a developing country (other than India). They must not hold any visa for temporary or permanent residency in India or any developed country. Applicants must possess a Masters or equivalent degree in science or engineering. They have to be accepted at a biotechnology institution in India.

Sandwich Fellowship applicants have to be registered PhD students in their home country and provide the “Registration and No Objection Certificate” from the home university. Full-time Fellows must be willing to register at a university in India.

They have to provide evidence of proficiency in English, if medium of education was not English, as well as evidence that they will return to their home country upon completion of the fellowship. They cannot take up other assignments during the fellowship period and have to be financially responsible for any accompanying family members.
