Type of Funding

The Global Fund for Women is inviting women-led groups outside the US that advance the human rights of women and girls, to apply for Travel Grants and Event Organizing Grants in 2017. Through June 2017, the Fund will award grants to proposals that focus on the following key priority areas:

  • Freedom from Violence
  • Economic and Political Empowerment
  • Sexual & Reproductive Health & Rights
  • Advocacy, Media and Technology and
  • Women’s Funds

In particular, the Fund supports women’s rights organizations working as part of movements to prevent violence, advance women’s political and economic empowerment, and further sexual and reproductive health and rights.

Travel Grants of US$5,000-$15,000 will be awarded to attend national, regional, and international gatherings and events. Event Organizing Grants of US$10,000-$20,000 for women’s rights groups, and US$15,000-$30,000 for women’s funds, will be awarded for organizing time sensitive convenings and events.

Priority will be given to women’s rights groups and funds that work with and/or are led by highly marginalized communities and which have limited funding. They have to concentrate their efforts on the abovementioned priority focus areas.

Applicants must have received a grant from Global Fund for Women in the past 5 years and have a current organizational profile. A group may only have 1 travel or event grant proposal open or under consideration at a given time. Several groups may jointly seek funding for the same event if the lead group submitting the application has an organizational profile and has received a grant from Global Fund for Women in the past 5 years.

Global Fund for Women does not fund:

  • Government entities
  • International organizations proposing projects with local partners
  • Political parties or election campaigns, and
  • Women’s branches/departments/projects of mixed gender organizations.

However, women-focused projects within mixed-gender organizations may occasionally receive support from Global Fund for Women if they work with particularly marginalized groups: for example, women within groups of people with disabilities or women within LGBTQI organizations.

Applications can be done online and will be considered on an ongoing basis, provided they are submitted at least 8 weeks before the start date of the event.
