Type of Funding
Women graduates undertaking doctorate degree studies in the UK in AY 2018/2019 can apply for Funds for Women Graduates (FfWG) Foundation Grants to help them with their living expenses, provided that they are in the final fee-paying or writing up year of their PhD or DPhil programme. Applications will be judged on the financial needs as well as academic calibre. Any subject or field of study will be considered.
FfWG also offers Emergency Grants to graduate women who face an unforeseen financial crisis (not with their fees) whilst engaged in study or research at an approved institution of higher education in the UK.
The quantum of Foundation Grants awarded will be decided by FfWG and the grants are only meant as contribution towards the living expenses of 1 year’s academic study or research, and not meant for tuition fees. Emergency Grants are not ‘top-up’ awards; rather, they are for students short of funds, and are one-off payments to assist with completion of an academic year’s work. All grants are offered on a needs basis.
Foundation Grants: Female graduates in any field, from anywhere in the world may apply, provided that they are studying in the UK and in their final fee paying or writing up year of PhD or DPhil. Students reading for a part-time PhD or DPhil will be eligible to apply from their third year onwards. There is no upper age limit, but they have to provide evidence of ability to pay fees. Any subject or field of study will be considered.
Emergency Grants: Women Graduates from anywhere in the world, regardless of age, are eligible. Evidence of ability to pay fees is required.
FfWG does not provide funds for: undergraduate degree, a second first degree, university or college fees, students looking to start a course in the next academic year, fieldwork outside Great Britain, conferences, exhibitions or seminars either overseas or within Great Britain and travel costs outside Great Britain.
Request for application forms for Foundation Grants must be done via email by 22 February 2018. Application forms must be submitted by 2 March 2018. Emergency Grants are offered twice a year, in May and November. In 2018 the closing date for the next round of grants is 11 May 2018.
