Undergraduate students from universities all over the world are invited to take part in both the 17th Economix: Global Economic Challenges Paper Competition and Essay Competition. Participants need to submit sharp and critical academic papers around the grand theme of the Paper Competition, which is: “Inequality in the Modern Era: An Unresolved Question”. The sub-themes of the Paper Competition are centered around the issues surrounding gender inequality, the digital divide and political instability and populism, and they are: 1) Addressing the Economic Roots and Impacts of Gender Inequality and 3) Political Instability and Populism: Inequality’s Unforeseen Aftermath.

After submission of the papers, the top 12 teams will take part in the next 2 stages of the Paper Competition, which are: the Head to Head and the Grand Final Stages, which will take place from 5 to 7 November 2019, in Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Essay Competition bears the same grand theme. This theme requires the participant to explore arguably 1 of the most pertinent and impactful issues in recent years. Being a very broad phenomenon, inequality uncovers questions related to the ethics, morality, philosophy, and politics in economics.


The Paper Competition: 1st Prize: US$1000; 2nd Prize: US$600; 3rd Prize: US$400.

The Essay Competition: 1st Prize: US$200; 2nd Prize: US$150; 3rd Prize: US$100. Moreover, 1 best essay from each of the following regions will be declared as Regional Winners and receive e-certificates: Asia, America, Australia and Oceania, Africa and Europe.


Entrants for the Paper Competition must be 2-person teams, with members of the teams being undergraduates from universities all over the world. There is no limit as to the number of teams that can participate from each university.

Only single individuals can take part in the Essay Competition. They must be undergraduate students with keen interest in economics, who can be from any university in the world. There is no limit as to the number of individuals that can participate from each university.


The papers and essays are to be submitted online by 18 August 2019.
