The Center for Conflict Studies at Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey (MIIS) is inviting university students and graduates with relevant work experience, to apply for the Center’s 2019 Summer Peacebuilding Program (SPP), which will take place over 3 weeks, from 29 July to 16 August 2019. The first and second week of SPP will be held at the MIIS campus in Monterey with a lodging option within walking distance to campus. The third week of SPP is residential at the Mount Madonna Conference Center in Watsonville, CA. There are a few partial scholarships available for selected participants who meet all admission criteria.

The SPP will consist of 3 parts:

  • Part I: Conceptual Inputs: Peacebuilding, Critical Development, Security, Justice, Governance, Gender, Culture, Trauma-healing, and Reconciliation
  • Part II: The Praxis of Peacebuilding: Skills for Peacebuilding; Non-Violence, Media, Field Visits to organizations working on reducing gang violence in the Salinas, Soledad and Oakland areas in Northern California, and
  • Part III: Applied Practice


A few partial scholarships are available.

Participants successfully completing all 3 weeks of the program will receive a Certificate of Completion. Students can receive academic credits for the program.


Applicants need to have academic or equivalent work experience. They must be proficient in English and have clear personal and career goals. They need to be able to meet the program’s financial requirements.
