Type of Funding
The Asia Foundation Development Fellows program is inviting highly qualified, young professionals from Asia who wish to enhance their leadership skills and gain in-depth knowledge of Asia’s critical development challenges, to apply for its 2017 Fellowship year.
The program provides the flexibility for Fellows to custom-tailor their own professional development component and to stay in their current occupations while participating in the program’s rigorous modules. The 2017 program will be conducted in South Korea, Vietnam, and USA (San Francisco, New York, and Washington DC). The Leadership Training Program in South Korea and the Workshop on Asian Development in Vietnam will take place from 9 to 22 April 2017. The Leadership Dialogue and Exchange in USA will take place from 10 to 26 September 2017.
All program expenses are covered, including costs for coursework and programming, airfares and local transportation, lodging and meals, visa fees, and health and accident insurance. Fellows are also provided a per diem during program activities.
Each fellow will also receive a with a flexible small grant, known as the Professional Development Award, of US$5,000 provided to allow the Fellow to design and shape individualized plans to further his/her leadership skills and relevant professional experience in areas importance to his/her career. Each Fellow will have to develop a personalized, year-long work plan that may involve such areas as enrollment in specialized training programs or short courses, language study, travel to attend key regional forums or workshops, or engagement in a series of other enrichment activities to further their leadership and professional capabilities.
Mentoring will be provided by The Asia Foundation.
Applicants must be highly talented individuals below 40 years of age, who are resident nationals or citizens of the countries where The Asia Foundation has programs, namely: Afghanistan; Bangladesh; Cambodia; China; India; Indonesia; Japan; Korea; Laos; Malaysia; Mongolia; Myanmar; Nepal; Pakistan; Philippines; Singapore; Sri Lanka; Thailand; Timor-Leste; and, Vietnam. They must have demonstrated high achievement and outstanding potential for professional advancement and significant impact in their chosen field.
They must also possess a track record of experience and accomplishment related to The Asia Foundation’s fields of expertise – governance and law, economic development, women’s empowerment, environment, and regional cooperation. Applicants must be conversant in English and be able to participate in all program components on the program dates specified. It is essential that they possess outstanding personal character and integrity and are thoughtful, committed, respected and inspirational leaders within their professional fields and within their larger community.
